Crew Spot Light: Search Dogs keeping us Safe

The BADGER is very thankful for having a talented and dedicated crew that takes care of her and the many great passengers she services each year. One very important part of our crew is our search dogs. Every person and piece of cargo that enters the boat will be greeted by Dara and Mika and their handlers Dean and Tony. On a busy day the K9 team may screen over 300 vehicles and several carts of luggage.

Dara is a five-year-old female Belgian Malinois and is working with Dean at Mid-Michigan Police K9 for scent detection. Mika is 4 years old and also a female Belgian Malinois. Mika is working with Tony for open area searching. They both were born in Poland and specifically bred for detection work.

Historically, the Malinois is a herding dog and have been protectors of farms and families for centuries. In the Twenty-First century, they have been proven to be an invaluable asset to the Military. A Belgian Malinois played a critical part of Seal Team Six in the 2011 raid that took down Osama Bin Laden.

We are proud of Dara and Mika and their handlers, Dean and Tony, for their service and commitment to keeping us all safe. We are thankful for our dedicated and diverse crew who keep us safe and add to our rich Legacy!
