Onboard Employment*

 

Customer Service Team:

The following onboard positions will work a schedule of 3 days one week, 4 days the next week with an average of 36-48 hours p/wk.  Day or night shifts available.  All schedules will vary and include weekends.

Ideal candidates will commit to working from mid-May to mid-Oct.  However, High School and College students are welcome to apply!  We will work around your school schedule from June to August. 

*Associates – Work together as a team to serve food/bar service in an attractive, sanitary and timely manner. Whether prepping food in the Badger Galley, operating a cash register or maintaining passenger areas, Badger Associates are the best!  They supply excellent customer care throughout the crossing.  Must enjoy customer interaction and have the ability to multi-task.  Prior retail experience a plus, but not required.

*Housekeepers – If you can work independently, stay on task and take pride in your work, this job is for you! Responsible for keeping all general passenger areas, secondary passenger areas, and passenger staterooms clean and orderly. This position allows you to walk freely through passenger areas offering assistance when necessary and giving care and comfort to passengers throughout the voyage. 

*Entertainer/Host – Responsible for the daily passenger entertainment that is offered aboard the Badger.  Entertainers have the ability and confidence to interact with a diverse group of people of all ages.  For many passengers, playing a rousing game of Badger Bingo is the hi-light of their trip!  We invite Entertainers to bring their talents to the job whether it’s juggling, musical talent, card tricks or telling a good story.

Gift Shop:

*Associates – The smile behind every sale in the Badger Boutique!  Responsible for neatly stocking shelves, product inventory, retail sales and merchandising in the Badger’s onboard gift shop.  You must enjoy customer interaction, and take pride in keeping the gift shop neat, attractive and organized. Retail/Cashier experience is a plus. 

Galley (Kitchen) Team: 

The following Galley positions can expect to work 3 days one week and 4 days the next week. Typically 10-12 hour days with a set schedule that may include weekends.  Ideal candidates will commit to working from mid-May to mid-Oct.

*Day Cook –The Galley Team work together to create a clean and positive environment in order to provide excellent meals to both the crewmembers and passengers. We encourage Cooks to bring their own style of cooking and recipes for meals and baked goods. Responsible for assisting Lead Cook in planning weekly menus, preparing, and presentation of food served; maintaining the highest standard of food quality and cleanliness.  Assist with maintenance of Galley, dry storage areas and mess halls.  Prior cook experience required.

*Night Cook – Works independently to provide an evening meal for the crewmembers and preps food for the day shift. Responsibilities include baking, stocking, and cleaning galley areas.  Must be self-driven, manage time wisely and have prior cooking experience including baking and cooking from scratch.    

*Day Prep Cooks – Assists the Cook on duty in preparing, serving and presenting passenger and crew meals.  Prepares cold and hot food items in large quantities. Responsible for unloading ship supplies, maintaining on-board stock and assist Galley Team with cleanliness of galley areas and equipment.  Prep Cooks are often given an opportunity to present a main course or baked goods of their choosing to the crew.  Prior cooking/baking experience including working a flat grill is preferred.

*Galley Utility – Responsible for proper cleaning of all kitchen equipment and utensils. Monitor the proper water temperature for the wash and rinse sinks.  Maintains proper storage of all pots, pans and kitchen utensils. Provide meal set up for mess halls; keeping condiments, cups, silverware, and napkins well stocked. Assist with loading and stocking ship supplies. This is the perfect entry-level position with the opportunity to transfer to another department after the first season.

Navigational Crew

*Night Patrolman – This nighttime shipboard position makes scheduled rounds of the ship to 15 punch clock stations.  Additional responsibilities include monitoring of all Fire-Safe Doors and reporting any safety or passenger misconduct issues. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, able to walk through the ship and up and down stairs many times through the course of the evening.  Must be available to work mid-May through mid-October 3 -4 days per week.   

*Navigational Housekeeper – This daytime shipboard position is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of all navigational crew quarters (including assigned cabins).  Crew areas are to remain sanitary and orderly condition to satisfy federal regulations, as well as provide a safe and comfortable living area to the navigational crew of both deck and engine departments. Must be a self-starter, have the ability to work alone and stay on task, able to lift 40 lbs and work with cleaning chemicals. 

*All onboard positions will be subject to a physical, drug screen and criminal records background check.

ENGINE DEPARTMENT

QMED – Fireman – Candidates must possess a Merchant Mariner’s Credential with QMED (Fireman/Oiler/Watertender) endorsement, a current Medical Certificate, and a valid TWIC card.  QMED will expect to live aboard and stand a 4-hour watch, twice a day, 7 days a week during the 2020 sailing season (mid-May through mid-Oct). Competitive wages and benefits package after completing a 90-day probationary period.

Shore-side Employment*

Part-time and full time seasonal shoreside positions are available (average of 10-40 hours per/wk).  Day and evening shifts are available.  All schedules will vary and include weekends.

Ideal candidates will commit to working from mid-May to mid-Oct.  However, high school and college students are welcome to apply!  We will work around your school schedule from June to August.

Traffic Team:

Lot Supervisor -  This is a full-season shore position for the person(s) with the confidence to organize and coordinate vehicles in the staging lot to achieve maximum safety and efficiency in loading vehicles onto the boat; while supervising shore staff and communicating loading information to the Deck Department.  The Lot Supervisor will direct the shore staff to conduct cleaning tasks as needed.  Candidates must be available to work from mid-May to mid-Oct, have leadership qualities and the willingness to experience loading and unloading of vehicles in order to effectively learn the job.  Supervisory experience a plus.

Auto Attendant-  This shore position is responsible for the loading and unloading of passenger vehicles onto the Badger in the safest but fastest manner possible. The hours for this position are flexible.  You can work mornings only, evenings only or both if you choose!  Additional responsibilities include handling passenger’s baggage, assisting navigation during docking, the removal of garbage and recycling from the car deck, shore-side maintenance and grounds keeping of LMC property. 

Cardeck Security Officer- This shore position is responsible for monitoring and controlling access to the ship from the car deck by all employees, passengers, and guests. Responsibilities include checking employee IDs as they come on board, ensuring that only ticketed passengers are boarding the ship, and ensuring that no unauthorized vehicles or luggage are brought onboard.  A security background is a plus but not necessary.  Ability to be alert of all surroundings while maintaining a welcoming demeanor with boarding passengers is a must. 

Chairlift Operator- This shore position is responsible for operating the Badger’s handicapped passenger lift. The principal duty of this person is to assist handicapped and elderly passengers on and off the lift and operating the controls that bring the lift up and down during boarding and disembarkingChairlift Operators are required to be friendly and polite, is able to learn the fine details of operating a lift, and is capable of walking up and down stairs many times per day.

Ticketing and Reservations

Ticket Agent-   This seasonal, part-time shore position is responsible for passenger check-in and ticket processing.  Ticket agents greet passengers outside while the ship is in port as well as in the office on day and evening shifts.  Additional responsibilities include answering phones, onshore gift shop sales, and daily cash remittance.  A desire to interact with SS Badger passengers and crew is a must!  Cashier experience is a plus.

Wisconsin Shore Staff and Available Onboard Positions:

Lake Michigan Carferry will be hiring Manitowoc-based Auto Attendants, Cardeck Security Officers, Chairlift Operators and Ticket Agents for the 2020 sailing season as well as onboard positions, Galley Prep Cooks and Night Bakers and Customer Service Associates.  (All Job Descriptions listed above with the exception of Galley Night Baker).
